Help a child, transform a society

WATER FOR EVERY CHILD PROJECT

Transforming Schools and Communities Through Safe and Clean Drinking Water in Rwanda

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental human right and one of the most powerful tools for building healthy, thriving learning environments. Since 2023, Bridge of Hope, in partnership with No Thirsty Child, has been leading the Water for Every Child Project to ensure that children across Rwanda have access to safe drinking water while at school.

By installing high-quality water filters in schools, this initiative directly improves children’s health, attendance, and academic success, creating long-term impact in some of Rwanda’s most underserved communities.

The Global Water Challenge

According to research conducted by Mighty Water, over 700 children under the age of five die every day worldwide from diarrheal illnesses caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation, https://mightywater.org/global-water-crisis
Many children miss school frequently due to waterborne diseases, deepening the cycle of poverty and inequality, especially in rural and low-income communities.

In Rwanda, the challenge remains significant. UNICEF reports that only 57% of the population has access to safe drinking water within a 30-minute journey from home, https://www.unicef.org/rwanda/water-sanitation-and-hygiene
This means that many children especially those in rural areas spend their school day without access to clean water, affecting their health, concentration, and ability to learn.

Bridge of Hope is committed to contributing to global and national water access solutions by ensuring that no child is left behind due to lack of safe water in schools.

Impact So far: Reaching Schools, Transforming Lives

Over the past two years, the Water for Every Child Project has made extraordinary progress. To date, we have:

  • Reached 58 schools
  • Covered 34 sectors in 9 districts
  • Provided safe drinking water to 85,691 students

Thanks to the installation of high-quality water filters, schools report:

  • Reduced cases of waterborne diseases (diarrhea, cholera, typhoid)
  • Improved student attendance
  • Better concentration in class
  • Higher academic performance
  • A healthier and safer school environment

By reducing illness-related absenteeism, students can now attend school consistently and succeed academically offering them a brighter and more promising future.

Supporting National Priorities and Global Goals

The Water for Every Child Project contributes directly to Rwanda’s national efforts in:

  • School health and hygiene (WASH)
  • Quality education
  • Child protection and development

It also aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education
  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

Our commitment goes beyond schools. This project strengthens entire communities, reduces health burdens on families, and supports long-term national development.

Our Vision: 2026–2028

To scale our impact and reach more vulnerable communities, Bridge of Hope is expanding the Water for Every Child Project. Over the next three years, we aim to:

  • Equip 50 additional schools with water filters
  • Reach over 100,000 more students
  • Extend clean water access to rural communities where needs are greatest
  • Support both schools and communities through safe water solutions

By strengthening water access, we are directly supporting education, reducing inequality, and promoting a healthier future for children across Rwanda.
